Working from Home with SpiraVeg

Working from Home with SpiraVeg

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 hit Canada last month, most of us have been working and living entirely at home. At first glance, spending more time in your home sounds like a good thing – but there can be challenges if you are new to the work-from-home lifestyle!

When it comes to feeding your family, it’s important to maintain some kind of a routine in the food that you’re eating and the times that you’re eating it too. Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean that you need to spend more time in the kitchen! Keep up with your meal-prep habits and set aside a couple hours on the weekend to prepare nourishing meals that you and your family can enjoy for quick lunches, dinners and snacks.

Today we’re sharing a tried and true recipe that will be a hit with the whole family! This simple bean salad is easy to make; tastes great warm, cold or room temperature; and is full of protein and fiber for all-day energy!

Chickpeas: Chickpeas are a good source of fiber, carbohydrates and plant-based protein. Chickpeas also contain magnesium, which is an important mineral in our body! Healthy intake of magnesium supports muscle function, protein synthesis, blood sugar control and blood pressure regulation. You’ll also get a great boost of plant-based protein from the chickpeas in this recipe! Protein is needed by every cell in our body and works to keep our bodies functioning optimally (especially during times of stress!).

Spinach: This dark leafy green vegetable contains a healthy dose of antioxidants and minerals. We like using spinach in this recipe because it has a versatile and subdued taste that even kids enjoy! Spinach is a great source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support a healthy immune system and help build strong muscles and bones.

SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina: SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina is packed with protein (approximately 60-70%), contains all essential amino acids, is filled with antioxidants and contains high levels of iron, calcium, healthy fats and B vitamins. Plus, this blue-green algae helps to keep the body balanced through exceptional detoxification properties and immune system support!

½ cup cooked lentils

2 tbsp olive oil

1, 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

6 cherry tomatoes

1 cup spinach

juice of 1 lemon

1-2 tbsp SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina

salt and pepper, to taste

Sauté the spinach with olive oil and tomatoes for 3-4 minutes. Add lentils and chickpeas, then stir for another 1-2 minutes.

Prepare dressing by combining lemon juice, fresh spirulina, salt and pepper. Drizzle homemade dressing over the lentils, chickpeas and tomatoes.

Serve with fresh pita on the side.

Kid and adult approved – YUM!

Have leftovers? Here’s what to do with them: Store in an airtight glass container for up to one week in the refrigerator. Enjoy cold, room temperature or warm.

We also love the hemp seeds or hemp hearts in this recipe! These small seeds add a slightly sweet and nutty flavour and offer a boost of nourishment. Hemp hearts are a great plant-based source of protein and healthy fats.

Lastly, cinnamon has a subtly sweet flavour and acts as a potent blood sugar stabilizer. Ground cinnamon also has anti-inflammatory properties and is very high in antioxidants. Consider adding more cinnamon to your diet with recipes like this one!

Make a batch (or two) of these delicious treats today to bring to your next holiday party – we can guarantee that you and your loved ones are going to love them!

1 cup finely chopped nuts
1 cup chopped seeds
1 tbsp cinnamon
2 tbsp hemp hearts
2 tbsp flax
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
¼ cup almond butter
1-2 tbsp SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina
Goji berries to taste

Combine dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl, then add oil and almond butter*.

Amp Up Immunity with SpiraVeg

Amp Up Immunity with SpiraVeg

Getting sick during the fall season can feel inevitable and totally out of your control. But the truth is there are a few healthy habits that can help you stay immune from the cold and flu bugs floating around! Just like any healthy habit, taking care of your immunity requires consistent effort so that your system is strong and resilient, even when everyone else around you seems to be sick.

A healthy immune system keeps us feeling vibrant and fresh. The most important thing is to listen to your body! If you’re feeling tired or run down, don’t ignore it – give your body the extra rest and TLC it needs.

Amp up your immunity daily with SpiraVeg fresh spirulina! Our tasteless, odorless blue-green algae contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich nutrients that support a healthy immune system! Beta-carotene and phycocyanin are powerful antioxidants found in spirulina that are vital for everyday health and immune system support.

Did you know that spirulina’s beta-carotene level is ten times more concentrated than beta-carotene found in carrots?

Beta-carotene plays a critical role in maintaining our body’s natural defenses and is known for its ability to protect the body from damaging free radicals. In addition to fighting free radicals and oxidative stress, the beta-carotene found in fresh spirulina helps to combat inflammation and contributes to overall immune system support!

Fun fact: 1 TBSP of SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina contains 4230mcg of Beta Carotene!

Spirulina contains a compound called phycocyanin, an antioxidant that fights off anything that could cause damage to your cells. This compound is also what gives spirulina its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Phycocyanin is capable of boosting the immune system when needed and relaxing the immune response of allergic reactions (which could include the symptoms experienced because of seasonal allergies). The phycocyanin found in fresh spirulina is bioavailable and easily absorbed into the body, meaning that you’ll get the maximum nutrient benefit.

Fun fact: 1 TBSP of SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina contains 500mg of Phycocyanin!

We’re sharing our favourite immune-boosting elixir, packed with all-natural ingredients like ginger, lemon and apple cider vinegar. One of our favourite ingredients for immunity, ginger contains antibacterial properties that support the immune system and can help to prevent nausea and soothe an upset stomach. Combined with vitamin C rich lemon and apple cider vinegar, if you feel a cold coming on or just need a healthy boost, try this delicious, anti-inflammatory drink featuring our fresh spirulina!

½ tsp fresh ginger, finely grated

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Juice of ½ lemon

1 cup filtered water

1 tbsp SpiraVeg fresh spirulina

Simply add all ingredients in a tall glass and stir to combine. For maximum benefit, enjoy this elixir first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.

We hope that spirulina’s immune system boost keeps you healthy and vibrant all-year long! What do you do to stay healthy during cold and flu season? Comment below, we’d love to hear from you!

Spirulina – A Beauty Boosting Superfood

Spirulina – A Beauty Boosting Superfood

There’s so much to say about algae’s internal benefits – but there are also some amazing external benefits that shouldn’t be forgotten. Healthy, glowing skin is all about the food we eat, the nutrients we absorb and the products we use on our skin.

Spirulina has extraordinary antioxidant properties that boost the skin’s defenses against a variety of environmental stresses, and also contains high concentrations of vitamins, minerals and amino acids! Amino acids (aka the building blocks of protein) help the skin regenerate and replenish, and vitamins, minerals and antioxidants increase the firmness and elasticity of the skin while also providing long-lasting hydration. When used topically, spirulina has some serious beauty benefits that cannot be ignored!

  • Rejuvenate the appearance of skin and smooth away wrinkles and fine lines
  • Fight acne thanks to its strong antibacterial properties
  • Natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce skin irritations
  • Natural humectant that will keep your skin visibly hydrated and supple
  • Helps protect against UV related pigmentation thanks to it’s potent array of phytonutrients, carotenoids, and anti-inflammatory vitamins

Antioxidants: Nature’s way of protecting our cells from free radicals from the environment that we live in, the water we drink and the food we consume. The powerful antioxidants found in spirulina offer a natural defense to support skin health and vibrancy.

Omega Fatty Acids: Serve as essential building blocks for healthy skin, keep the skin hydrated, calm signs of redness and sensitivity and deliver antioxidants for anti-aging results.

Magnesium: Soothes, calms and reduces sensitivity in the skin. Magnesium can reduce redness and inflammation, revealing a beautiful, even skin tone.

Potassium: Purifies the skin to release fluids and toxins from the cells. Potassium is also known to help keep the skin hydrated.

Sodium: Hydrates and draws moisture into the skin cells, keeping skin soft, supple and radiant.

Calcium: Helps to promote collagen and elastin production. The calcium in spirulina encourages the growth of new skin cells.

Iodine: The iodine in spirulina detoxifies and stimulates cellular renewal and regeneration.

Add SpiraVeg fresh spirulina into your summer skincare routine with this easy, at-home DIY brightening honey and spirulina face mask. We can guarantee that this nourishing face mask will leave your skin feeling moisturized and glowing!

  • 1 tbsp organic honey
  • 1 tbsp SpiraVeg fresh spirulina

  4. Apply directly to skin with fingertips or a facial brush to your face and neck
  5. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water and a washcloth and follow with your favourite moisturizer or serum for added hydration.

Healthy Travel Tips with SpiraVeg

Healthy Travel Tips with SpiraVeg

Let’s face it, while travelling it can be easy to let your health and wellness practices fall to the wayside. But this year, we think you should try something different! Work to continue to prioritize the wellness rituals that make you feel your best and and make time for whatever you need: exercise, warm water with lemon, mediation, supplements, and SpiraVeg!

Today we’re sharing our top seven travel tips to help keep you healthy and feeling your best on your next summer getaway.

  1. Increase your nutrient intake 2-3 days before you go on vacation. Start sipping on green juices, homemade broth and increase your intake of raw fruits and veggies. When you’re away from your home you may not have easy access to these nutrient-dense foods so eat them while you can!
  2. Pack healthy, non-perishable snacks for long travel days. Whether you’re stuck in a plane or a car, having non-perishable snacks is a great way to curb your hunger.
  3. Prioritize a healthy breakfast. Breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day, so think clean, nutrient dense and fresh! Our favourites are green smoothies, plant-based breakfast bowls and coconut yogurt with fresh fruit.
  4. Find your go-to health focused spots. Find comfort in knowing where you can find nutrient dense foods that make you feel great. This could be a local health food store, juice bar, or delicious farm-to-table restaurant.
  5. Exercise while sightseeing. Instead of hitting the hotel gym, run outside, swim and walk everywhere you can. This way you are able to explore your new environment and move your body!
  6. Consciously indulge. Vacation isn’t meant to be a week-long cheat day but you also don’t need to deprive yourself of trying exciting foods. Give yourself permission to eat (or drink) something purely because it’s delicious. You can and should enjoy the indulgences that matter most to you while you’re on vacation.
  7. End your vacation on a relaxing day. If you can, plan to come home one day early to allow yourself to unpack, prepare some healthy meals and get your life in order (so to say). Trust us, this makes a big difference!

Once you’re home, take the next 2-3 days to really nourish your body. Focus on incorporating nutrient dense plant-based foods, lots of water and of course, SpiraVeg! We love SpiraVeg post-vacation because fresh spirulina gently detoxifies the body, supports healthy digestion, reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system.

We hope that these wellness-focused tips help you enjoy a healthy holiday! How do you stay healthy while on vacation? Comment below, we want to hear from you!

Spring Cleaning with SpiraVeg

Spring is upon us, making it the perfect time to focus on healthy detoxification. As the seasons change, many of us are inspired to do some spring cleaning in our homes – but our bodies could probably benefit from a gentle detox too!

With that being said, you don’t (necessarily) need to do anything radical. Our bodies are equipped with highly effective detoxification systems – but our daily diet, environments and routines can overwhelm the body’s detoxification organs – which can lead to inflammation.

Get back on track by focusing on REMOVING unnecessary toxins, BOOSTING your nutrient intake, ADDING healthy habits into your daily routine and SUPPLEMENTING with SpiraVeg fresh spirulina daily!

REMOVE toxins by avoiding processed foods, buying organic when possible, storing leftovers in glassware or BPA-free containers and using eco-friendly cleaning products.

BOOST nutrient intake by filling your plate with nutrient-rich vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes and, of course, SpiraVeg fresh spirulina.

ADD healthy habits by relaxing and restoring with massage, sauna, skin brushing and meditation.

SUPPLEMENT with fresh spirulina to boost your daily protein, antioxidant, iron and fatty-acid intake. This superfood supplement can help to lower inflammation, which is critical when detoxifying the body.

Enhance your daily detox and gently cleanse your liver, skin, colon, kidneys and lungs with the nourishing elixir recipe below! This easy-to-prepare elixir combines the powerful detoxification properties of spirulina, mint and lemon – and may even replace your morning cup of coffee!

SPIRAVEG FRESH SPIRULINA: Spirulina’s high-antioxidant content makes it the perfect detoxing food! This blue-green algae is also recognized as a powerful cleansing food because it contains proteins and peptides that are particularly good at binding to toxins and excreting them from the body so that they are not absorbed into the bloodstream.

MINT: Did you know that fresh mint has one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any food? This herb is the PERFECT ingredient for detox drinks because it offers a fresh flavour while soothing an upset stomach, aiding digestion and supporting oral health!

LEMON: Lastly, lemons have amazing alkalizing and detoxification properties! The lemon in this elixir can help to cleanse and detoxify the entire body. This not only leads to being healthier internally, but also can also reduce blemishes and support clear skin.

Juice 1/2 lemon
1 cup warm, filtered water
Fresh mint leaves
1 tbsp SpiraVeg fresh spirulina

Add all ingredients into a tall glass and gently stir to combine.
Enjoy immediately! This elixir is most effective when enjoyed first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.

Antioxidant rich SpiraVeg!

Antioxidant rich SpiraVeg!

What is Spirulina?

You may have heard about it, wondered how exactly to pronounce it or been curious about what it actually is, so here it goes – spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that is known to be incredibly nutritious for the human body. Spirulina is used in many different cuisines, but has become increasingly more popular within plant-based communities thanks to its high protein content (almost 70% protein!) and abundance of health promoting nutrients!

Spirulina is commonly found in several forms: chewable tablets, fine powder, capsules, and now – frozen cubes and raw, fresh in jars!

We’re all about the nutritional punch and long-list of health benefits that spirulina offers! This blue- green microalgae has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can improve immune system function, protect the liver, reduce allergic reactions, and increase muscle endurance – just to name a few!

With that being said, it’s also important to note the difference between dried and fresh spirulina (because trust us, there’s a BIG difference).

In order for a food to be considered living, it MUST contain complete water cells. Unfortunately, most spirulina products are spray dried at over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which reduces the water content to almost zero. If you’ve ever tried dried spirulina, you probably noticed a strong (and rather unpleasant) odour and taste – simply put, that’s dead spirulina.

Just like people, spirulina needs water to survive. This is where FRESH spirulina becomes a game-changer for your health! This superfood is a potent source of powerful antioxidants that are key in fighting free radical damage and oxidative stress!

Quite simply, antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals and work to stop the formation of new free radicals. By supplementing with antioxidant rich spirulina, we boost our bodies ability to battle environmental stresses and in some instances, we can even reverse some of the damage (yes please!).

Antioxidants are vital for everyday health and immune system support. But there’s another reason to love antioxidants – they are the ultimate defense against premature aging!

Spirulina is rich in the following antioxidants:

  • Carotenoids + beta-carotene: Beta-carotene is known for its ability to protect the body from damaging free radicals. This is important because harmful free radicals are the primary cause of chronic disease, aging, and degeneration.
  • Lutein + zeaxanthin: Known as the antioxidants that protects your eyes and skin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are considered natural treatment modalities for eye disorders, like macular degeneration.
  • Cryptoxanthin: This antioxidant recognized as a precursor of Vitamin A, which is essential for eyesight, growth, development and immune support.
  • Superoxide Dismutase: This powerful antioxidant is known to repair cells and reduce cellular damage in the body – making every cell in the body more resilient to outside pollutants and toxins.

In addition to fighting free radicals and oxidative stress, the antioxidants found in fresh spirulina help with detox, wrinkles, tissue regeneration, longevity, inflammation and disease!

SpiraVeg’s tasteless and odourless spirulina is an incredible way to supplement with antioxidants every day. Learn more about SpiraVeg and our ATB Boostr Campaign here!

V-Day SpiraVeg Fudge

V-Day SpiraVeg Fudge

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing a delicious vegan Mint Chocolate Fudge recipe from Nutrition Stripped! This simple recipe offers a healthy way to satisfy a sweet tooth, is relatively low in sugar and is rich in healthy, satiating fats!

Fresh Spirulina: Our tasteless and odourless spirulina offers a boost of minerals, amino acids and nutrients like beta-carotene, iron, phycocyanin, and protein! Spirulina also contains high levels of chlorophyll, which helps to naturally remove heavy metal accumulation in the body from the foods we eat and our drinking water, and supports a healthy digestive system by promoting microflora balance in the intestines! Plus, this blue-green algae acts as a natural food colouring – making this recipe as beautiful as it is delicious and good for you!

Cashew Butter: Cashew butter is known for its sweet flavour and creamy texture. You may not know, but aside from taste and consistency, cashews add to the nutrition-density of this sweet treat. Cashews are rich in minerals (including copper, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc) and protein. Copper, like many minerals, is important in enzyme production, but also plays a role in how our body uses iron. Copper acts as an antioxidant to get rid of free radicals, develop bone and connective tissue, and supports brain function among many other benefits.

Coconut Butter: Coconut butter is a source of healthy fats, specifically medium chain triglycerides (MCT). Unlike long chain fatty acids which must go through modification prior to being digested, medium chain fatty acids are passively diffused from our gastrointestinal tract to the portal system – meaning our bodies find it super easy to break down the fat before getting rapidly absorbed and used for energy by the body. These healthy fats support a healthy metabolism, keep us feeling satisfied and hold this beautiful recipe together.

We’re loving this fudge because it is quick to make and uses simple and real ingredients. We also love that we can sneak in SpiraVeg for added nourishment, without changing the flavour! Make this beautiful fudge to share with someone special for a Valentine’s Day celebration and if you have any left over, store in the fridge or freezer!

Chocolate Layer (Bottom Layer):
• 1/2 cup creamy cashew butter
• 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
• 1/2 cup melted coconut butter

• 1 cup melted coconut butter
• 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
• 1 tablespoon maple syrup
• 1/2 teaspoon SpiraVeg Fresh Spirulina
• 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

1. Use a silicon dish (about 8×4 or 9×5 inch) or pan lined with parchment paper to take
out the fudge easily.
2. With 2 mixing bowls, make each layer in separate bowls.
3. For the Mint layer: using a spoon, combine all ingredients for the mint layer until
