FAQ

What's the difference between the Fresh and the Frozen Spirulina?

Our fresh spirulina is raw product, has never been processed. Our frozen spirulina cubes are frozen almost immediately after harvesting, so in principle, they are almost the same quality as our fresh product.

The fresh spirulina needs to be kept in fridge. The lab test proves it is safe to be used in four weeks. We suggest it to be consumed within 21 days after harvesting. (Best Before date)

The frozen Spirulina cubes can be kept in your freezer for a longer time. Suggested best before date is 1.5 years after harvesting (printed on package).

The fresh Spirulina does have a smoother texture than frozen form. Frozen Spirulina may have a nutrient loss of about 3-5% only on some vitamins.

What's the shelf life of fresh spirulina?

Our fresh spirulina is safe for at least four weeks when properly stored in a fridge (confirmed by a food safety lab). We suggest to consume within three weeks from harvest date which is the Best Before date (on jar lid).

Our fresh Spirulina starts degrading the moment it is harvested as it is removed from its natural growing environment. Over time, some of the cells will die and this is the natural deterioration process as we DO NOT use any preservatives. This process will be noticeable after about a week as you begin to see and taste some changes. You may a see a blue liquid (phycocyanin-the potent anti-oxidant) collecting on top and it may develop a slight sulfur smell. This is not an indication of the product going bad, it is the result of natural degradation of live Spirulina and completely harmless. On average, two weeks is tolerable by most people, but it all depends on your individual taste.

Our fresh product can be frozen into an ice cube tray at any time if looking to preserve your spirulina.

When can I consume spirulina?

Just like any other food, fresh/frozen Spirulina can be taken any time during the day, before, after or together with your regular meal. A great time is first thing in the morning to start your day.

How much should I consume?

Our Spirulina is a whole food product and safe for all people of all ages. For general nutritional purposes, we suggest 1-2 tablespoons per day of our fresh spirulina, or 2-4 frozen cubes per day of our frozen product. We all have different nutritional needs and reasons for consuming Spirulina, so feel free to adjust your consumption amounts as your body dictates. For people with any health concerns or questions about whether Spirulina is right for you, please consult with a physician or heath professional.

Any consumption concerns with SpiraVeg Spirulina?

Spirulina is generally suitable for all ages. It is a very nutrient dense beneficial food for all people. However, there are special groups of people that are not suggested to consume it, such as people with very high iron levels, people with immune system disorders or people who are sensitive to nutrients like Vitamin K. If you have any concerns, please consult your physician / nutritionist before consuming it.

Is SpiraVeg spirulina organic?

As far as having “organic certification”, the straight answer is No. We discovered that if we choose to grow our Spirulina in a “certified organic” way, our Spirulina would not be pure and clean and the overall quality would be much lower than what we are producing right now. Here is why:

For agricultural crops to be Certified Organic, they need to be grown in an ecosystem that uses organic fertilizers, and meet other pesticide usage, product traceability standards, etc. The organic agriculture environment uses living fertilizers, including plant and animal waste. These various fertilizers are great for soil mediums but not really well suited for water growing environments for spirulina.

Spirulina grows naturally in water, in an aquaculture environment, which is rich in mineral salts like phosphorus, nitrogen, and sodium. These minerals are the fertilizers nourishing the Spirulina, which are naturally found in the Earth’s soil. But these mineral fertilizers are not defined as organic as per the commonly used agriculture “organic” standard, since they are not derived from plant and animal waste; therefore, our spirulina can not be “certified organic”. We NEVER use any pesticides, herbicides or preservatives with our Spirulina production or packaging.

At SpiraVeg, quality is our top priority. To ensure our fresh spirulina is of the highest quality, we send our product out to third party labs for various Food Safety and Nutrition Testing.

We are very proud to say that our spirulina is very pure, clean and nutrient rich. Check the Lab Test Results here

Can SpiraVeg spirulina help detoxing?

Absolutely! In nature, spirulina acts like a sponge and absorbs many toxins from its environment. After consuming spirulina, it will absorb heavy metals in our body and remove them, therefore detox our body. But the key is, only clean spirulina can help. Spirulina with heavy metals will damage our body. No heavy metals have been detected in SpiraVeg Spirulina.

We harvest Spirulina 2-4 times a week, depending on demand. Our goal is to get the freshest possible Raw Live Spirulina into your hands. We harvest your order and ship to you the same day! Shipping out every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, depending on your location, expect 1-3 days transit time.

What is the blue color found in Spirulina?

The blue color is a pigment called phycocyanin and a very high concentration is found in fresh Spirulina. Phycocyanin (essentially a protein) is a very potent anti-oxidant and provides exceptional anti-inflammation and combating free radicals in our body. The blue color can appear when Spirulina cells break (Spirulina cellular structure is very fragile).

How is SpiraVeg Spirulina grown?

We have developed our own technological system to grow spirulina (patent pending). It is an algae and it does grow in water. The growing system is fully closed, a very compact design and does not require a large use of land as with traditional out door pond styles. Being an indoor system, all growing parameters are very controllable and stable allowing us to consistently produce high quality spirulina all year round (yes, even in Calgary, in winter!) A major advantage of the indoor and sealed system is that it helps to prevent the growth of foreign toxic algae and does not allow the entrance of any unwanted contaminants that can come from open air type systems (outdoors).

Are there any heavy metals in SpiraVeg Spirulina?

In nature, spirulina acts like a sponge and absorbs many toxins from its growing environment. Our product was tested by an independent lab and the report concluded that our spirulina is ultra clean and free of all heavy metals tested. Metals tested include: Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead and Mercury with all below the detectable limits of the test.
